Vinyl is by far the most common siding material in the Twin Cities, and the reason is simple: it's affordable, low-maintenance, and comes in a wide range of colors and styles. For most homeowners on a budget, it's the default choice — and it can be a good one.
Where vinyl holds up well
- It doesn't absorb moisture, so water intrusion from rain or snowmelt isn't a structural concern
- It won't rot or corrode
- Color is molded through the material, so surface scratches are less visible
- Very low maintenance — occasional washing is typically all it needs
Where vinyl struggles in Minnesota
- Cold brittleness. Vinyl becomes brittle below freezing. A hailstone that would only dent fiber cement can crack vinyl at -10°F. This is Minnesota's biggest vinyl problem.

Fiber Cement Siding in Minnesota: The Balanced Choice
Fiber cement — most commonly associated with James Hardie products — has taken significant market share in Minnesota over the past decade, and for good reason. It performs better than vinyl in nearly every technical category except cost and installation speed.
Where fiber cement excels
- Dimensional stability. Fiber cement doesn't expand and contract the way vinyl does. It handles temperature swings well.
- Impact resistance. It handles hail significantly better than vinyl. Not indestructible, but meaningfully more resilient.
- Appearance. Fiber cement can convincingly replicate wood grain, board-and-batten, and shake profiles. It looks more substantial than vinyl at comparable profiles.
- Fire resistance. Non-combustible, which matters for insurance.
Where fiber cement falls short
- Moisture management. Fiber cement is a cement-based product — it's not immune to moisture damage if installed improperly. Cut ends must be sealed; bottom edges must maintain proper clearance from grade. Minnesota installers who know this material do it right. Those who don't cause long-term moisture problems.
- Repainting. Fiber cement requires repainting every 10–15 years. Factory pre-painted products (like Hardie ColorPlus) extend this significantly but add cost.
- Weight. Much heavier than vinyl. Requires proper framing support and takes longer to install.
Metal Siding in Minnesota: The Long-Haul Option
Steel and aluminum siding are the most durable options available, period. Metal doesn't rot, doesn't crack in cold weather, handles hail better than any other residential siding material, and can last 50+ years with minimal maintenance. The tradeoff is cost and aesthetics — metal has a distinctive look that works beautifully on modern and industrial-aesthetic homes, but less naturally on traditional Colonial or Craftsman styles.
Where metal dominates
- Hail resistance. Metal is the clear winner here. After a major hail event, metal siding often comes through with only minor cosmetic denting while vinyl and fiber cement require replacement.
- Freeze-thaw. Metal handles thermal cycling better than any other material.
- Longevity. If you're planning to stay in the house for 30+ years, metal's higher upfront cost often pencils out over time.
- Insurance. Some insurers offer premium discounts for homes with metal siding due to its superior hail and fire resistance.
Where metal falls short
- Cost. Highest upfront cost of the three options.
- Denting. While metal resists cracking, it can dent from hail impact — and dents in metal are visible and don't self-repair.
- Noise. Heavy rain on metal siding is audible inside the house. Foam-backed products mitigate this.
- Style limitations. Works best on contemporary, modern farmhouse, or industrial aesthetics.
